Show your love for Somerset this Valentine’s Day

Show your love for the environment and for your Valentine this 14th February.

Swapping single use, for home-made can save you money and help keep Somerset green and more sustainable.

Somerset Council are promoting simple ways to reduce waste and save money this Valentine’s Day to avoid the reliance on single-use presents or excess packaging.

Tips for a green Valentine’s Day celebration:

  • Look for greetings cards made of recycled materials or Forest Stewardship Council certified paper – or make your own – and recycle your card or cards using the kerbside cardboard collection service.
  • Recycle your empty bottles of fizz, glass can be put in the green recycling box.
  • Avoid buying over-packaged cards and gifts; avoid retailers who make you pay for packaging rather than the contents.
  • Give a recycled or home-made gift, group membership or an “experience”, such as a spa day or cookery course etc, or buy a ticket to an event to enjoy together.
  • Buy a rose bush to plant or, if buying a bouquet, compost it later (cut flowers should not be put in the food recycling bin).
  • Make a meal from food you already have in your cupboards, fridge and freezer. For inspiration, find low-waste tips and recipes at www.LoveFoodHateWaste.com.

Cllr Dixie Darch, Executive Lead Member for Climate and Environment at Somerset Council said:

“Planning ahead can help to reduce costs and protect the environment. When celebrating, we want to encourage everyone to think green.

“Choosing to avoid packaging can be a great way to reduce waste, showing your love for Somerset and your Valentine.”
