Age UK Somerset seeking Volunteers to reduce loneliness in Burnham and Highbridge

Age UK Somerset is appealing for new volunteers in Highbridge and Burnham-on-Sea to help support older people experiencing loneliness and isolation.

There are currently local older people on the waiting list for the charity’s Wellbeing Friends and Walk and Talk services and so volunteers are being sought to volunteer in these roles.  By giving up just one hour a week local people can make a real difference in their community and help older people to live happier, more connected lives.

For many older people, regular social contact can be very limited, with weeks going by without them having the chance to talk to another person, this is particularly true if they live alone, have reduced mobility or face transport issues.  A friendly conversation, regular companionship, or gentle walk can have a huge impact on their wellbeing.

Wellbeing Friends volunteers pay a weekly visit to provide some company, while Walk and Talk volunteers go out with their older client for a stroll and a chat.

Age UK Somerset says no experience is necessary for these roles which are flexible, rewarding, and fully supported with training provided. To find out more please visit: https://www.ageuk.org.uk/somerset/get-involved/volunteer#wbfrole email volunteers@ageuksomerset.org.uk or call 01823 345627.
