On Friday 15th August, Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council joined the nation in marking the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, honouring the end of World War II and paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed.
At 12 noon, a solemn two-minute silence was observed beside the flagpole at Old Station Approach in Burnham-on-Sea. Town Councillors, residents, visitors and local organisations gathered in quiet reflection to remember the courage and resilience of those who fought in the Far East and those who never returned home.
Immediately following the silence, a flag-raising ceremony was held, symbolising peace, resilience and national gratitude. Councillor Facey, Mayor of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge, who led the tribute said “it was a privilege to honour the people that served our towns and country”.
A fly past of vintage and replica aircraft also coincided with the service.
