Heating and Health – Preventing Issues

The ongoing global energy crisis has far-reaching effects, and one of the most critical aspects is
its impact on people’s health. As fuel and electricity prices rise, many individuals are facing
fuel poverty, struggling to maintain warmth in their homes during the colder months. Cold homes
pose both short-term and long-term health risks:
Respiratory Conditions: Exposure to low temperatures increases the risk of respiratory infections.
Circulatory Issues: Cold environments can lead to higher risks of stroke and heart attacks.

Pick up one of these thermometers from our Home Energy Advisor to make sure you are keeping your home at the right temperature.

The energy crisis has pushed more people into desperate situations through increasingly high bills. This is coupled with millions losing out on their winter fuel allowance increasing the concern that some will not be putting heating on and keeping warm well this winter.

Our local news highlighted this issue

Our Home Energy Advisors have carried out 480 Home Energy Savings visits since Dec 2022 and
each one is very different.

Here’s Mr G’s story

Although Mr G is living with COPD, because of the concern over costs, he didn’t use his
heating, he cancelled his home help, and didn’t cook proper meals.

Our Home Energy Advisor was able to alleviate some concerns by issuing some fuel vouchers and an air fryer, as well as fitting some LED lightbulbs, radiator reflectors and draught excluders.

and Mr G said…….

‘Very happy with the air fryer and thank you very much. He is getting on with it so well his daughter has
got him a recipe book for beginners. He also said Maria is a very lovely, lovely lady and thank you for all
her help and support’

Useful tips

  1. Make sure you know how use your heating system correctly. It may sound trivial but it’s essential for making sure it’s working as efficiently as it can.
  2. Avoid cold spots in the house by keeping all radiators on, low if necessary, but keep them on to help the system work correctly.
  3. Use thick heavy curtains at windows to eliminate draughts.
  4. Keep doors closed in rooms not being used regularly.
