18th May 2020 – 17. Burnham In Bloom Alternative Competition

Briefing Note for councillors: Love Your Garden
Issued to: Town Improvements Meeting
Purpose of Report with the cancellation of all Britain in Bloom and Burnham and Highbridge in Bloom – alternative competition suggestion
Background
As an avid gardener, observer and judge for the local In Bloom organisation it has not gone un-noticed the amount of effort people in the community are putting into their gardens during the lockdown and feel that this effort should be noticed as not only does gardening improve people’s wellbeing, it is beneficial to the environment, encourages people to grow produce which in turn may see a greater need for allotments and local food growing projects, which when considering food miles is beneficial.
Ideas subject to initial review
From each of the wards – choose a winning garden, this could be from improvement (before and after photos), best balcony, allotment production, perfect pots etc.
Photos to be taken in May/June/July/August and emailed to the town council via info@ uploaded onto the new town council website. Closing date 28th August 2020.
The gardens will then be judged by a panel later in the year and a prize for each ward of a £20 garden pack.
Additional competition to run alongside to be judged later in September of tallest Sunflower aimed at under 18 years olds closing date 30th September with a £20 garden pack prize.
Financial implications
£120.00 Prizes
Policy implications
3.3 Support the promotion of Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge
4.1 Promote healthy living by supporting community-based activities and initiatives
Options:
Initial thought was for the ward councillors to identify suitable gardens to be nominated but we were concerned about the lockdown and also people maybe tending their back gardens more than their front.
It is requested that the small budget is allocated to permit the competitions.
